History

The original Tseshaht Market store began operating in June of 1979. It consisted of only two gas pumps. The store was destroyed by fire in August of that same year.

The second store, built on the existing site, opened in January, 1981. It served the community well for a number of years, but with the on-set of the new millennium, it became clear that a number of major upgrades were needed to meet today’s customer needs.

Through the combined efforts of FINESS (First Nation Emergency Services Society), NEDC (Nuu-Cha- Nulth Economic Development Corporation), and the Tseshaht membership/Chief and Council, the gas service and store upgrade started Spring 2000. The most noticeable change was switching our gas bar branding from Husky Oil to Tempo, an independent arm of Federated Co-Operative.

Our gas bar was closed from June 12th to July 28th of 2000, to accommodate the installation of new above ground gas tanks and new service pumps. The store however remained open for service.

Petco Industries, based in Prince George, did the site prep and install work. Many other contractors are to be commended for their hard work in getting the Market up and running again as quickly as possible, including Les Sam Construction, Braker Electric, Black Eagle Contracting, Larry McLean Plumbing, Morrow Engineering (on site) and Bullock Baur Engineering (consulting).

In spite of all the on-going renovations, our staff continued to provide all our customers with smiles and friendly service. At the same, our customers have remained incredibly patient and supportive. On July 15th, 2000, Tseshaht Market combined its grand re-opening with a customer appreciation weekend.
